Description

Western Union: An Early Circa 1871 Thomas Edison Stock Ticker Machine. Although the stock ticker was invented in 1867 by Edward A. Calahan, the design was improved upon becoming a commercial success thanks to Thomas A. Edison. The stock ticker offered here is one of Edison's earliest versions of these working models called the Universal Stock Ticker manufactured in the early 1870s. It is actually marked "Universal Stock Ticker 3-A /22 Ohms" so it can be dated to 1871 thru 1874. The stock ticker is accompanied by the original glass dome that housed the ticker. Because the glass originally fit onto a stand (which is seldom found with this model ticker), the glass dome does not fit perfectly. There were only 5000 of these units made, thus this early version is exceedingly rare.

Heritage is proud to offer two stock tickers in this sale, both originating from the same source. The consignor's grandfather worked for Western Union as a repairman for these machines from the early 1930's retiring in 1969. He retained the two stock tickers offered in this sale when they became obsolete rather than disposing of them, he chose to keep them as souvenirs for a job he loved. The other stock ticker offered elsewhere in this sale is a classic 1920's model.

Condition: Mechanism marked: "Electrical Industries New York" on one side, the other side is stamped "4493" with "Universal Stock Ticker 3-A /22 Ohms". Heavy cast base reads, "Western Union Telegraph Co." Accessories that accompany the stock ticker include the original glass dome or jar, with two original 3/4" wide x 7" diameter rolls of ticker tape replacements. The stock ticker itself displays very well with a partial roll of original ticker tape intact visually completing its look and charm. To find these 1870's vintage business machines in such complete shape is extraordinary. Highly prized as a collector's items they are great conversation pieces and real attention getters!
