Description
Sam Houston Original Painted Portrait. 11 1/2 x 16 inches, mixed media (pencil, ink, and gouache?) on card stock. No date, but possibly from life. A chest-up portrait of Houston in middle-age, wearing a frock coat and tie with a silver harp breast pin. Margaret Houston's estate in 1868 listed a harp breast pin. We could not find any other images of Houston wearing this pin suggesting this portrait may have been done from life or made for personal family use.Condition: Moderate edgewear, including small chips and a long vertical tear at the left edge. Some spotting to Houston's face and chest, with several small spots of delamination. Verso heavily toned with dampstaining present.
