Description

George Washington: Early 20th Century Figural Display. 64.5" tall, 17" wide, carved pine figure of George Washington, in the half-round, casually standing, dressed in his Revolutionary War uniform. The paint on the jacket and hat is mixed with sand, giving it a "rough" sandpaper finish. A very distinctive piece with bold, primary colors and a folk-art quality. Suspension hook attached on verso. We have seen a similar piece which, along with this example, was supposedly displayed in a Philadelphia theater in the 1920s. This piece looks like something from a carousel and may be the product of the Herschell-Spillman Company or the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. A wonderful piece of Americana and folk art which is sure to be a focal point and center of attention.

Condition: Sculpture has been stabilized along the head, near Washington's mouth, neck and hat, where previous cracks had stressed the wood. Great shape overall.
