Description
A Very Important Set of Six Silver Tablespoons Made by Paul Revere.
American Patriot Paul Revere Silver Tablespoons, Circa
1790-1800.Though Paul Revere is most remembered for his midnight ride warning Massachusetts' minutemen of the arrival of the British, he is also celebrated as a talented silversmith. Offered here are six silver spoons marked "Revere" on the back and owned at one time by the respected collector of Revere's silver work, George Gebelein.
Each spoon has slightly more than 2 oz of silver with the bowls measuring approximately 1¾" at their widest point. Each bowl is approximately 3" in length, making the spoon 8 3/4" in length with "Revere" marked on the back. All six spoons have a downturned rounded-end handle with an engraved monogram "DMS" in foliate script initials. The initials are those of a prominent colonial Massachusetts couple, Daniel Sargent and Mary Turner Sargent, who were married in Salem in 1763 and lived in Boston. Interestingly, Mary Turner Sargent was born in the house later made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel House of the Seven Gables. She was also the subject of a 1763 painting by John Singleton Copley, who is perhaps best known for his later portrait of Paul Revere.
In 1938 these spoons were purchased from the Sargent estate by George Gebelein, a noted silversmith who has been dubbed by many in the industry as the Paul Revere of the twentieth century. Although Gebelein died in 1945, his family continued his legacy until 1986, when they sold the business. By 1989, some of Gebelein's personal collection found its way to auction. In that auction's catalog, these spoons are attributed to the "Collection of George C. Gebelein."
The set is also referenced in the 1998 encyclopedia on Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers by Patricia E. Kane (pg. 833).
It is very rare to find a matching set of six spoons so impeccably provenanced that have remained together for 220 years.

They are in wonderful condition and are just three owners from the
original family. Most importantly, the set is documented and
pedigreed, which is again very exceptional.
