Description

Abraham Lincoln: Bronze Plaque by O'Donovan. 16 3/4" x 18 1/2" bas-relief bronze plaque titled "From the Volk Life-Cast of Lincoln". Signed in the upper left corner "[shamrock] O' 1880". Housed in what appears to be the original frame with eagle finial and wreath. Quite hefty with a beautiful patina. It is the work of William Rudolph O'Donovan (1844-1920), a Confederate veteran and self-taught sculptor who specialized in Washington and historical monuments. He collaborated with Thomas Eakins on the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, New York. Eakins modeled the horses and O'Donovan did Lincoln and Grant. We are also selling the matching Washington piece by O'Donovan in this sale.
