Description

Abraham Lincoln: Bronze Life Mask. Bronze version of the Leonard Volk life mask of Lincoln, originally executed in the Spring of 1860. It measures 9 5/8" high, 8" across and 7 1/2" deep. The underside of the jaw is incised: "A. Lincoln 1860 L. Volk Fecit". The inside of the left ear is incised: "J. Berchem Fondeur". Jules Berchem was a caster at the American Bronze Company in Chicago and produced his own version of Volk's work, likely copied from the original mold lent by friend and fellow-Chicagoan Volk. The first set produced of the Berchem work, in plaster and bronze, was presented to the Chicago Historical Society at the time of their production, circa 1880-1890. This example has a deep bronze finish and is in excellent condition.
