Description

[Spanish Texas]. Champ d'Asile Creamware Plate. 8.5" diameter and featuring a scene of French veterans of the Napoleonic Wars developing the Champ d'Asile settlement in Texas in 1818 along the Trinity River. Even though the veterans abandoned the settlement only six months after its founding, the French public developed an appreciation for Texas, which led them to become the first European nation to recognize the Republic of Texas two decades later. "Champs d'aisle" appears below the scene on the face of the plate. On the reverse, "CREIL 14" appears, along with a stamp too faint to read. Some signs of use.
