Description

Colonial America: Circa 1790 Exquisitely Detailed Folding Fan. Carved folding fan which, when fully extended measures approximately 16" across. There are 25 struts, held together by a silk grosgrain ribbon. There are two end pieces, thicker and more substantial. It is difficult to describe the workmanship involved in such a piece. The struts are very thin and have raised designs against a background composed of vertical "threads" with clearly defined spaces between each. The central design is a shield with the monogram "R W W", flanked by oval cartouches with boats, a pagoda and smaller buildings. The entire background has birds, flowers and vines. The grosgrain ribbon has broken in places and needs to be re-threaded or replaced to hold the entire piece together. The end struts are intricately carved with birds, flowers and buildings against a web-like field.

This item was owned by Zachary Taylor's youngest daughter, Ann Mackall Taylor and her husband, Richard Crooke Wood. According to a typed letter that accompanies the fan, the fan first belonged to Rebecca Brewer Wickham, born in 1710, who married John Crooke. It eventually passed to Rebecca W. Crooke, born in 1771 (ed.: likely the actual owner of the fan) who married John Wood. Their son Richard Crooke Wood married Zachary Taylor's eldest daughter Ann Mackall Taylor.

The lot will be accompanied by a Letter of Provenance from the owner detailing the line of ownership to the present time.
