Description
Uncle Tom's Cabin Stoneware Pitcher.7.5" high, 7" width
Staffordshire, England, circa 1850s
Manufactured by Ridgway & Abington
Sometimes called a "Slavery Relief Jug", pale gray stoneware with a flat exterior finish similar to that found on Wedgewood ceramics. The pitcher's handle is molded in the form of a praying slave (possibly Uncle Tom) while the sides are decorated with high relief anti-slavery vignettes. One image, reproducing the most famous scene from Uncle Tom's Cabin, shows Eliza and her child escaping across the frozen Ohio River. The other side depicts a slave auction wherein the buyers lounge about contentedly while the slaves weep. The auction features a broadside that reads, "By auction this day, a prime lot of healthy negroes". The underside of this piece is stamped by the maker and is dated January 1, 1853. An exceptional piece, this product was first marketed just months after the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Condition: Overall excellent condition with no evidence of defects.
