Description
1847 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge, Number 206. A flat square-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 42mm x 43mm. Manufactured by W. M. Rouse, this is the only year between 1829 and 1865 that the badges were made in a square shape. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "1847" bar punched; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and an incuse "206" in individual punches. The condition is very fine with sharp devices and a dark patina. There were an estimated 4171 badges manufactured this year. The Mechanic occupation is considerably less common than the Servant or Porter designations. A nice type example for an occupation type set.
