Description
1800 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire Badge. Number ??. A flat octagonal tag with a hole at the top for suspension, 38mm x 40mm. The "ATMAR" hallmark stamped on the reverse at the top denotes the manufacturer, Ralph Atmar, Jr.; this was the only year he produced these badges. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): an engraved "No ???"; "PORTER" in individual punches; and "1800" punched. This excavated badge is in very good condition with surface porosity and a very dark brown patina. Note that there is no "Charleston" on these first year badges. Even without being able to ascertain the number, this is a tremendously scarce badge from the first year of manufacture.Auction Info
