Description

Large Cuneiform Tablet
Mesoptamia, Umma.
Ca. 2020 B.C.
7"H. x 7-1/2"W.
An unusually large administrative tablet in red-brown, low fired terracotta bearing six columns of stylus impressed cuneiform text on the obverse with some columns left partially and intentionally blank. Reverse bears six columns completely filled. The text concerns payments to named workers. The tablet has been broken in three main, large pieces with several smaller pieces, all reattached and with some restoration over the breaklines and a small area and one corner of filler. There have been two or three more recent breaks, due to the softness and fragility of the low fire clay. These have their cracks visible. Reverse also has some surface erosion. Impressive size.
