Description
Very Large Beaded and Quilled Pipe Bag Which Belonged to Ogalala Sioux Chief American Horse (1840-1908). The largest pipe bag we have ever seen, measuring 10.25" x 41" (including fringe). American Horse, son-in-law of Chief Red Cloud, assumed the name and position of his famous uncle, who was one of the leaders at Little Big Horn. The first American Horse was killed by General Crook's troops in one of the punitive expeditions following Little Big Horn. The younger American Horse was considered progressive and promoted harmony with the white man. He opposed the Ghost Dance, toured for a time with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and was a supporter of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. In later life he lived at Pine Ridge, when this beautiful bag, befitting a chief, was probably obtained. It has an old tag reading "90 American Horse Pouch" and it is listed as such in the family's circa 1959 inventory of the collection.
The bag is in excellent condition but for wear to the quill work at the bottom. It is accompanied by an original cabinet photo of American Hors, identified on verso in pencil, which was passed down along with the bag.
From the Rathbun Family Collection. See also Lots 51370 through 51412 for additional material from this collection.
