Description
Beaded and Quilled Lakota Pipe Bag with Tamper, c. 1870. These bags were used to hold ceremonial pipes. This example is a thread-sewn, tanned hide bag measuring 22" long and 5" wide. It is decorated with glass seed beads around its rim, bottom, and, along with metal jingle cones, in select areas of the bag's body and ties. Attached to the bag's bottom edge is a 5" band of quilled strips followed by another 20" of hide fringe. Tamper measures 14-1/2" and also has a quilled band. There is minor loss to the quills and beads and moderate handling wear, else, this bag is in very good condition. The Michael Ward Collection of Western AmericanaAuction Info
