Description
Goodyear Blimp: 1930's Window Model Display. Magnificent piece of advertising. This painted balsa wood Zeppelin was likely a display piece at a travel agency promoting air travel via Zeppelins in the 1930's. The piece measures 35" in length and attaches to a tin 20" tall tower, which is attached to a heavy 6" x 18" steel base. The piece has the original Goodyear labels on each side and is in remarkable condition for being a light weight wooden advertising piece. Has some minor chips and a small crack near the front in the outer layer, else fine. In the 1930's Zeppelins made frequent transatlantic voyages, and had a top speed of 85 mph. The first transatlantic crossing by airship was made by the British R34 in July 1919 from Scotland to Long Island, NY which took 108 hours and 12 minutes. Eventually that mode of travel was over taken by Jet planes. Airships continue to this day to be used, primarily flying over large sporting events with digital advertising on the sides. But at one time it was a luxurious way to travel.Auction Info
