Description

George Gershwin Typed Letter Signed. One page on his personal letterhead, 8 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches; New York, NY; November 2, 1933. Gershwin writes to editor William Kozlenko, in part: "Now that LET 'EM EAT CAKE is launched I have a few minutes to myself and I want to take the first opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed reading the two copies of 'Europa' which you sent...I would like to take this opportunity to subscribe for a year." Signed, "George Gershwin."

"Let 'Em Eat Cake" had recently debuted on October 21, 1933, and was one of Gershwin's last productions on Broadway. The musical marked a turn for the composer beyond the musical comedy style that had made him famous. He died less than four years later.

Together with an Isaac Goldberg ALS. One and a half pages front and back on his personal letterhead, 8 x 10 1/2 inches; Brookline, MA; June 27, 1938. Goldberg writes to editor William Kozlenko shortly before Goldberg's death, in part: "I am in bed again, at the suggestion of the doctor. I must have been doing too much...Your Scribner book is here, and looks very good. So far, "Spanish Diggers" is as good as anything I've read...Don't forget that I'd like to see proof of the bit about me in the Harcourt-Brace book. Also, you now owe me $35, and my doctor needs the money!" Signed, "I.G."
A great pairing as Goldberg was a noted biographer of Gershwin.

Condition: Gershwin letter is toned with flattened folds. Approximate 1" separations at both margins of center fold, with margins of vertical fold just starting. Small chip and tear at bottom right margin. Paperclip indention at upper and lower left margins. Minor soiling on verso. Goldberg letter has flattened folds, minor toning and soiling at lower margin.
