[John Steinbeck]. Military Plaque and Insignia. Wooden plaque, 8.5" x 11", Vietnam; December 25, 1966. Presented to John Steinbeck, "With Warmest Personal Regards 25 Dec 1966" from Lt. General Chae Myung Shin, Commander of the Rok Forces in Vietnam. The plaque is decorated with mother of pearl lettering and floral design, along with six military insignias at the center. There is a wooden folding stand adhered to the back. The plaque is housed in a silk and velvet lined box.

Steinbeck, one year before his death, travelled to Vietnam to report on the war for Newsday magazine. Both of his sons also served in the Vietnam War.

Condition: Multiple scratches to the wood and metal plaques. Light soiling throughout, else good. The box is worn and toned at the corners and edges. Soiling throughout.
