Description

1861 John C. Frémont Autograph Letter Signed "J. C. Frémont". One page, 5.5" x 9", December 25 1861, soiled with a couple of small splits in the folds, else very good condition. At the time this letter was written Frémont had just been relieved of his command of the Department of the West by Lincoln. Frémont's meddling in the affairs of Missouri caused Lincoln to worry that it, and possibly other neutral states, might cause them to lean towards the Southern cause. The short letter reads, in part: "I have your note of the 25th but find it hard to make a fixed appointment which may now be interfered with by the current of affairs." Frémont letters are uncommon in wartime dates. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
