Description
Revolutionary War Major-General Nathaniel Greene Signature "N Greene", clipped from letter to a "Capt Hutchens", 7.25" x 3", dated "Dec 25th 1782" in another hand, secondary signature "Mrs Greene" on verso. Housed with an antique engraved portrait in a 13.25" x 14.75" modern wooden frame. Nathaniel Greene (1742- 1786), one of George Washington's ablest officers, was chosen to command the nation's demoralized Southern armies in the spring of 1780. Charleston and Savannah were in British hands while Loyalists pillaged the countryside at will. Over the course of a year, Greene steadily coaxed his redcoat opposite - Lord Cornwallis - across the Carolinas and to the latter's destruction at Yorktown. Marginal browning, smooth folds, very good condition.Auction Info
