Description

The Commander's Flight Suit Patches Worn on the First Shuttle Mission.

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Commander John Young's Flown Flight Suit Patches (Four) Directly from his Personal Collection, Certified and Signed on the Display Frame. Offered here is a stunning 22" x 22" framed display containing all four of Young's suit patches from this groundbreaking mission, April 12-14, 1981. A large sheet of parchment-type paper has the following text in attractive hand-accomplished calligraphy: "Space Shuttle/ Astronaut Insignias/ presented to/ John Young/ by/ Crew Systems Division/ Crew Emblem, NASA Logo and United States Flag/ from STS-1 Commander's Flight Suit/ Flown On First Shuttle Flight". Mounted to the sheet are the four suit patches as removed after the flight: U.S. Flag, 6.25" x 4.25"; an embroidered NASA logo, 4" x 2"; his black leather name patch "J. YOUNG," 3.75" x 1.25"; and an embroidered mission insignia patch, 4.5" x 4.75". Photos are available showing Young wearing his flight suit with these items attached. The flag has some light bleed through from the mounting glue and there are a few nicks in the frame, else excellent condition.

STS-1 was a mission of firsts: the first U.S. space flight since July 1975; the first flight of a reusable spacecraft; the first use of solid rocket fuels in a manned mission; and the first U.S. manned space vehicle launched without an unmanned powered test flight. The two crewmembers, Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert Crippen, bravely took this new and amazingly complex Space Transportation System Shuttle Columbia on her shakedown cruise that was not without some serious problems. However, they managed to bring it home to a safe earth landing at Edwards Air Force Base (another first) after thirty-seven orbits. Columbia went on to successfully fly twenty-six more missions; its tragic disintegration during reentry on its twenty-eighth flight on February 1, 2003, killed all seven crewmembers aboard.

On the paper backing of the frame, Young has written: "Patches From My Suit Flown Aboard STS-1. John Young".
