"Orion.... A Mighty Good Spacecraft ....A Great Lunar Base"

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown Spacecraft Identification Plate Display Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander John Young, Certified and Signed. A metal plaque of 5.25" x 1.75" mounted to a 10" x 11" wooden display plaque beneath a metal die-cut representation of the lunar module and an engraved brass explanatory plate with the words:
APOLLO XVI LUNAR MODULE 11
"ORION.... A MIGHTY GOOD SPACECRAFT
....A GREAT LUNAR BASE"
Capt. J. W. Young - Lt. Col. C.M Duke Jr. - Lt. Cmdr. T.K. Mattingly

The quote is in reference to a comment Young made when the Lunar Module Orion was jettisoned, 195:12:37 into the flight: "That Orion was a mighty good spacecraft. Real beautiful flying machine and a real great lunar base, too. We'll miss her."

Engraved on the plaque from the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. is the following:
APOLLO XVI LUNAR MODULE - 11
CAPT. J. W. YOUNG, LT. COL. C. M. DUKE, JR. LT. CMDR. T. K. MATTINGLY
above the Part No. "LDW280-60001-3, the Serial No. "001" and other information such as the Dsgn Cont No. "Orion - Casper", Contr No. "NAS 9-1100", "Launch Date 4-16-72", and "Splashdown 4-27-72".

Three of these Lunar Module 11 Identification Plates were flown to the moon on Apollo 16 and returned to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. who then mounted each ID plate on a shield-shaped wall plaque; one was presented to each crewmember. A rare opportunity to own a real piece of history. Very fine condition with just a few nicks in the wood.

At the bottom of this wooden plaque, Young has written in silver: "Plaque Flown on Apollo XVI John Young".
