Description

Taken Along on the Apollo 17 "Moon Buggy" Rides.

Apollo 17 Lunar Module Flown Lunar Rover Malfunction Procedures Checklist Card Signed by and from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan with smudges of lunar dust. This 5.75" x 5.75" printed cardstock page was carried in the rover on the moon's surface; one side is titled "LRV MALF. PROCEDURE", and the verso, "LOSS OF VOICE COMM with MSFN (LCRU)". Captain Cernan has certified and signed on the front: "Flown to the Lunar Surface on Apollo XVII Gene Cernan". There is a handwritten number at the lower right corner "7834.17". Nothing is more desirable to a space collector than an item that was actually on the moon's surface; the Apollo 17 Lunar Module Challenger spent more time on the moon than any other flight, more than three days. This was retrieved by Apollo 17 Commander Gene Cernan prior to the jettisoning of the lunar module. Very fine condition with smudges of lunar dust on both sides.

For those of us who have never gone into space: LRV is short for Lunar Roving Vehicle, a specially designed electric-powered wheeled vehicle that allowed the astronauts to traverse longer distances on the lunar surface, twenty two+ miles was "put on the odometer" during this mission; MSFN (pronounced misfin) stands for the Manned Space Flight Network or the Apollo Network, a series of Earth-based tracking stations used for communication and tracking of manned space missions; the LCRU (Lunar Communications Relay Unit) was on the LRV and facilitated direct communication with Earth.
