An Omega 861 That Flew to the Moon!
Apollo 17 Flown Omega Stainless Steel Speedmaster Professional Watch and Flown Metal Attachment Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Ron Evans, Certified and Signed. This watch has amazing provenance. It was used (along with the metal part it was attached to, also in this lot) by Evans on board the Apollo 17 Command Module America in a heat flow experiment. An 8" x 10" color photo of Evans and the experiment (with watch visible) is included with the lot. After the return home, Evans took a portable hand engraving tool and wrote: "Ron Evans/ Flown in C.S.M./ to the moon/ Apollo 17" on the back of the watch and "6-19 Dec 72 Heat Flow Exp" on the side. This should create quite a buzz among Omega and space collectors both.The included flown metal attachment is 2.25" x 1" and Evans has again certified and signed it with the engraving tool: "This piece flew/ on Apollo 17/ 6-19 Dec 1972/ glued to Omega/ Watch for flow/ experiment/ Ron Evans". There is a piece of Velcro on the verso. Very fine.
The technical specifications for this particular chronograph are as follows:
Movement: Caliber 861, # 30592275, 17 jewels, manual winding, rose colored plates, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance with shock absorber.
Case: Reference 145022-69 ST, three body, stainless steel, 41mm diameter, black tachymetre bezel calibrated to 500 UPH (units per hour), lyre form lugs, screw back, inner metal dust cap.
Dial: Matte black, tritium hour indexes, white minute and 1/5th of a second lines, luminous white pointed baton hands, thirty minute register, twelve hour register, constant seconds at nine o'clock, fly back center sweep second hand.
Band: Stainless steel style 1450 with Speedmaster signed deployant clasp.
Condition: Dial is very good, movement is very good and running, case and band are good overall.
Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Jan Evans (Mrs. Ron Evans) stating: "I certify that the stainless steel Omega Speedmaster watch and the small black metal piece that are offered with this letter were flown to the moon and used by my husband Ron Evans on Apollo 17, December 1972. At the conclusion of the flight Ron etched on the reverse of the watch: 'FLOWN IN C.S.M. TO THE MOON' and 'APOLLO 17' and his signature. On the edge of the watch he etched: 'HEAT FLOW EXPR' and '6-19 DEC 1972'. Ron has also etched directly on the black metal piece that it was 'glued to Omega watch' for the experiment. These items have been with our family since the flight."
