Description

Christy Mathewson Extremely Rare Letter on Boston Braves Letterhead! Typed Letter Signed, as president of the Boston Braves, 1 page, 8.25" x 11", on the letterhead of the Boston National League Base Ball Company, Braves Field, Boston, April 12, 1923. To H.R. Hardwick, probably one of the ball club's 85 minority shareholders. In fine condition, with a soft pencil dealer's notation at bottom, not effecting text. A very desirable, and hard to find, autograph.

"Big Six" had all the right numbers: 78 shutouts (third all-time); 372 wins (fourth); and a lifetime 2.13 E.R.A. (fifth). Add to that four seasons when he won 30 or more games, five when he won both the E.R.A. title and strike crown, and it's no surprise that in 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of baseball Hall of Famers. In 1923 he became the president of the Boston Braves and here, five days before the start of the season, he alerts Mr. Hardwick of a Board of Directors meeting. In full: " There will be a 'get-together' luncheon for the Board of Directors of your company in a private room at Youngs Hotel, on Monday, April 16th, at 12:30 noon. This will be no long drawn out affair and I am hoping that you can attend. Hoping for the pleasure of your acceptance, I am..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
