[Garth Williams]. Rosemary Wells. Group of Six Illustrations by Garth Williams for
Emmett's Pig,
With Original Application of Watercolor by Rosemary Wells.
These printed illustrations are on stiff watercolor paper and signed by Rosemary Wells. Garth Williams signature or initials in facsimile. Various sizes. Near fine.
From the Estate of Garth Williams.
Garth Williams' beloved illustrations for Mary Stolz's
Emmett's Pig
(1959) were updated and colorized by popular children's book author and illustrator Rosemary Wells, ca. 1999. This delightful reimagining of Williams' original black and white drawings - authorized by the estate of Garth Williams - is the first appearance of these illustrations in color.
Ms. Wells' thoughts on this project can be found in the publisher's blurb that appeared in the full-color edition of
Charlotte's Web
(to which she had previously contributed colorized illustrations): "Rosemary Wells, author and illustrator of almost eighty books, considers Garth Williams one of the true geniuses of twentieth-century book illustration and feels that had he had today's technology available, he would have chosen to do the illustrations for
Charlotte's Web
in full color. Applying a very simple palette befitting the story's setting, Ms. Wells hopes her results would have pleased Garth Williams."
This wonderful collection of
original art, each signed by Rosemary Wells and with her hand-applied watercolor,
is as much a testament to her talent and vision as it is to that of the legendary Garth Williams. (Total: 6 Items)
