Jan De Bischop. Wonderful copper-plate engraving from
Paradigmata Graphices Variorum Artificum,
per Joh. Episcopium. Ex Formis Nicolai Visscher.
Published at the Hague, 1671. Jan De Bisschop (1628-1671), who Latinized his name into Johannes Episcopius, was a lawyer who became a Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver. He was a fine artist, but as an engraver he is most deserving of notice, and he has left a great number of plates principally etched and harmonized with the graver in a free and pleasing manner. There is great relief and richness of effect in his prints. His most important work was a series of 154 engravings from celebrated antique statues and sketches by eminent painters entitled:
Paradigmata Graphices Variorum Artificum.
Very good.
