Description

Percussion Half Stock Rifle by Reed Dutton, Richland County, Ohio, Circa 1845. We are of the opinion that this rifle was originally full stock and somewhat longer. 33¾" octagonal barrel with deeply rifled .31 caliber bore, a classic "squirrel rifle." 1" across the flats, with German silver blade front sight and V notch rear sight. Signed at the breech in die stamped letters "R. DUTTON". It is our opinion the gun was probably shortened about 6" from the breech end during the period of use. The barrel exhibits a light coat of pitting overall. Single screw engraved percussion lock, missing the hammer screw, double set triggers. All brass furniture including three ramrod pipes, trigger guard, butt plate, forestock wear plate and very nice patchbox. The wear plate and patchbox are both extensively engraved with a vine and leaf motif. Curly maple stock simply cut at an angle at the tip of the forend. There is a small moulded cheek piece. There are large replaced slivers around the lock on to the lower portion of the fore stock that should be "neatened up." Still an attractive signed American rifle.
