Description
Abraham Lincoln: 1860 Campaign Parade Flag with Unusual Star Configuration. 21" x 41" [sight] cotton parade flag, printed in bold red, white, and blue, mounted to linen with plywood backing. The flag features rows of stars, with twelve fully visible and four partials. The flag features 3-red and 4-white alternating stripes, with the two central white stripes boldly stenciled "LINCOLN. &. HAMLIN."-a powerful and patriotic campaign declaration for Abraham Lincoln and his 1860 running mate, Hannibal Hamlin of Maine.Parade flags of this period were typically printed on cotton, intended for short-term use during rallies and parades. Lincoln & Hamlin textiles of any kind are exceedingly scarce, and this medallion-star variety ranks among the most desirable campaign flag formats.
N.B.: The consignor's family were among the earliest settlers of Ft. Harrison in Vigo County, Indiana. The flag has been in the family since 1860 and was found folded up in a trunk along with books, powder horns and Civil War medals. The consignor's grandfather took a special interest in family history and preserved such artifacts as cherished heirlooms.
Condition: Professionally mounted and framed to an overall size of 31" x 52"; scattered fabric losses, primarily in the red stripes, with some separations in the canton, though the stenciled legend remains bold and clear. Damp stains, as shown. A rare and important surviving artifact of Lincoln's historic 1860 campaign.
