Description
Gemini 9 Original Crew: Elliot See Signed Cover [and] Charles Bassett Small Signed Photo. Both items are originally from the same collection. As follows.See: A blank Airmail philatelic cover bearing an 8¢ stamp signed in black felt tip: "Elliot See". It is canceled in Union City, New Jersey on the date of See's death, February 28, 1966. This New Jersey collector was going to use this envelope for the Gemini 9 flight and, instead had it canceled on the date of his tragic death. Small address label. Excellent.
Bassett: A 4"x 5" glossy B&W portrait photo signed in blue ballpoint (poor contrast): "To Peter Van Miert/ Best Wishes/ Charles A. Bassett". Fine. Included, for purposes of display or matting, is a glossy color print of the two posed in white spacesuits with helmets on table in front.
The original Gemini 9 prime crew consisted of Elliot M. See Jr., the mission commander, and Charles A. Bassett II, the pilot. Both men were members of NASA's second astronaut group, selected in 1962. Gemini 9 was to be their first spaceflight, with plans for complex rendezvous and docking operations and a spacewalk. Tragically, on February 28, 1966, See and Bassett were killed in a T-38 jet crash in St. Louis, Missouri, while attempting to land in poor weather for training at McDonnell Aircraft. Their deaths marked the first fatal accident involving astronauts in active flight status. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
