Description

Urban VIII Papal Bull. One page (in Latin) on vellum, 12 1/2 x 7 7/8 inches, Rome; 1631. Papal Bulls were official communications from the Vatican, written in a highly stylized version of Latin known as scriptura bollatica. Typically, a papal bull begins with the pope's name and the phrase "episcopus servus servorum Dei" ("bishop, servant of the servants of God"), with the date appearing at the end of the text. After the 15th century, these documents were reserved for solemn or official occasions.

Pope Urban VIII, born Maffeo Barberini (1568-1644), reigned from 1623 to 1644. He was the last pope to expand papal territories through military force and was a major patron of the arts and reformer of church missions. Urban VIII is also known for his role in the Galileo affair, having forced the scientist to recant his support for heliocentrism in 1632.

Together with a seminary diploma in Latin. One printed page on paper, 13 x 8 1/2 inches; August 30, 1839.

Condition: Papal bull is creased at folds with pinholes at right and left edges from previous mounting; touch of loss at top edge, not affecting text; docketed on verso. Diploma is lightly toned with smoothed folds and scattered soiling throughout; a few minor spots of loss, not affecting text; separation at the top edge reinforced with clear tape.
