Description
John Brooks Document Signed. One partially printed page, 10 x 16 1/4 inches, Boston; May 10, 1817. A pardon issued by the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, remitting the sentence of Ahimaz Buel. Signed, "J. Brooks" as Governor. It reads, in part:"Ahimaz Buel...was convicted of the crime of forging and counterfeiting Bank bills &c and thereupon by Our said Court was sentenced to suffer solitary imprisonment ten days and afterwards confinement for life to hard labour in Our State Prison a part of which sentence remains unexecuted...upon full consideration of the premises, We do hereby remit to him the said Ahimaz Buel the residue of the punishment which by the sentence aforesaid he is still liable to suffer."
With two engravings of Brooks engraved by A. B. Durand, measuring 6 x 9 3/4 inches and 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches.
Condition: Pardon lightly toned; flattened folds, with separations thereat, touching text but not affecting legibility; light ink transfer from where document was folded; some edgewear, including a few small chips; miniscule pencil annotation at bottom edge. Engravings each lightly toned with some edgewear; moderate foxing and stray marks to the smaller engraving.
