Description

Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company Stock Certificate Issued to David G. Burnet. One partially printed page, 8 x 12 1/2 inches, New York; October 16, 1830. Certificate No. 480, issued to David G. Burnet, one of the empresarios of the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company-and, later, interim President of the Republic of Texas. Burnet endorses this certificate on the verso; however, ink erosion has rendered his signature largely illegible. Signed at the conclusion by the three "Trustees & Attorneys": Anthony Dey, William H. Sumner, and George W. Curtis. Countersigned by Secretary W. H. Willson.

In part: "That the Subscribers as the Trustees and Attorneys of Lorenzo de Zavala, Joseph Vehlein, and David G. Burnet, have given and do hereby give to David G. Burnet...One Labor of Land within the limits of four adjoining tracts of Land in Texas." With a borderless map of eastern Texas along the lower margin, showing the Gulf of Mexico and containing shaded areas of the company's landholdings.

Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Rough edges, resulting in some chipping. Paper is fragile, with ink erosion at Dey and Willson's signatures; ink erosion also at Burnet's signature on the verso, resulting in loss affecting text on the recto. Two small pencil annotations at the top edge.
