Description

José Justo Corro Broadside Decree Establishing a Commissary Department at Matamoros for the Army Now Proceeding to Texas. One page (in Spanish), 8 1/4 x 12 inches; Mexico, October 15, 1836. Broadside decree issued under the heading of the Treasury Department listing five articles extending the opening of ports at Matamoros and north for the purpose of supplying the Mexican army. Despite their decisive loss at San Jacinto and Santa Anna having signed the Treaties of Velasco (May 1836), relations between Texas and Mexico remained unresolved. Although the major battles had already been fought, they technically remained at war. Signed in type at the conclusion by Ignacio Alas as Secretary of the Treasury.

Interim president José Justo Corro had previously reopened the ports at Matamoros in a decree of July 16, 1836 (referenced in article five), this decree further directs additional ports to the north be opened for the exclusive use of supplying the army. A paragraph added at the conclusion specifically lists the provisions referenced in the second article (English translation): "Flour.-Rice.-Sugar of all kinds.-Cacao.-Chocolate.-Coffee.-Hot peppers.-Barley, and all kinds of forage.- Beef salted, smoked, preserved, &C.-"

As Mexican forces regrouped at the southern border, Matamoros became a key staging point for troops and provisions.

Condition: Rough edge at left where integral page was removed. Slight strip of darker offsetting along top and right edges. Light creasing throughout.
