Description

Abraham Lincoln: "Five Dollar Bill Pose" by Mathew Brady. 3 1/2" x 5 1/8" oval silver print photograph mounted on a thick 6"x 8 mount. On the verso, in period ink, it reads "Lincoln by Brady, Wash. D.C. 1865". Listed in Lincoln in Photographs as O-91, was taken by Brady studio operative Anthony Berger in Washington, D.C. on February 9, 1864. Thirty years after his father's death Robert Lincoln wrote to collector Frederick Meserve stating "I have always thought the Brady photograph of my father, of which I attach a copy, to be the most satisfactory likeness of him." This example likely dates to the last quarter of the 19th century.

Condition: The image of Lincoln is superb with exceptional tone and detail. There is a light blemish at the lower right mount, and minor wear. Overall a fine example of desirable pose.
