Just Months into the War of 1812, Madison and Monroe Sign a Ship's Passport for the "Ship Genl. Hamilton of New York"
James Madison Scalloped Edge Ship's Passport Signed
("James Madison"). One partially printed page on vellum, 10
3/4 x 15 3/8 inches; New York; November 2, 1812.Ship's passport No. 141, issued to the "Ship Genl. Hamilton of New York," captained by Sears Gantley and crewed by twenty men. It authorized the ship, which had "the burthen of Three hundred ninety seven & 13/95 tons...TO PASS with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandise without any hinderance seizure or molestation..." Signed, "James Madison," as President and countersigned by James Monroe as Secretary of State, "Jas Monroe." Blind embossed paper seal at lower left, and engraved maritime vignettes at the top. Docketed on the verso.
Condition: Overall good, on sound vellum with minor, general wear. Flattened folds with some creasing and cockling at center outer margins. Scattered staining throughout. Adhesive and mounting remnants along outer margins of verso, with minor adhesive showthrough on recto. Pencil notations at upper margin of verso.
