Description

Bruce McCandless II Signed Large STS-41-B Untethered Spacewalk Color Photo, with Added Comments. A 16" x 20" silk finish photo on Kodak Endura paper of McCandless floating in the distance above Earth's blue horizon in an extravehicular activity (EVA) outside the cabin of the Shuttle Challenger. He has signed in silver felt tip against the blackness of space: "First untethered spacewalk/ February 7, 1984/ Bruce McCandless II/ STS-41-B". Excellent.

On February 7, 1984, during the STS-41-B mission, Bruce McCandless II became the first person to fly in space without a physical connection to his spacecraft. Using the nitrogen-propelled Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) backpack, he ventured more than 300 feet away from the Space Shuttle Challenger while traveling at 17,500 miles per hour. This historic achievement produced one of NASA's most iconic images and proved that astronauts could navigate independently to perform complex satellite repairs and orbital tasks.
