Description
Valery Bykovsky Signed Soviet Cover Celebrating 20 Years of the Space Age, with Photo. An attractive philatelic commemorative cover issued in 1977 by the USSR to honor the XX ЛЕТ КОСМИЧЕСКОЙ ЭРЫ, "20 Years of the Space Age," marked by the 1957 launch of Sputnik. The illustrated cachet features artwork of a rocket launch framed by Sputnik's iconic orbiting silhouette. Affixed in the upper-right is a 10-kopek Soviet postage stamp from 1976 commemorating the Soyuz 22 mission, postmarked October 4, 1977, with a clear cancel from "КОСМИЧЕСКОЙ ЭРЫ" (Cosmic Era). Signed in felt tip by cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky (Cyrillic), a veteran of three missions (Vostok 5, Soyuz 22, and Soyuz 31). Included, for purposes of display or matting, is an 8" x 10" glossy color print of Bykovsky. Very fine.Bykovsky was a key figure in early and mid-era Soviet human spaceflight, and this signed postal piece stands as a poignant tribute to that legacy. The Soyuz 22 mission, highlighted on the stamp, was flown by Bykovsky and cosmonaut Vladimir Aksyonov and was equipped with a specially modified camera for Earth observation during Cold War-era reconnaissance. His career exemplified the pioneering spirit of the Soviet space program and its contributions to human spaceflight.
