Description
Alexander Hamilton Letter Signed. One page, 8 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches, "Treasury Department," [Philadelphia]; December 13, 1792. In this letter to Sharp Delany, Hamilton asks whether the estimate of duties collected by Delany's office includes a deduction for expenses incurred during the quarter, and then provides instructions on how to report such estimates more accurately in the future. Laminated with a heat setting acetate at an earlier time (circa 1930s) to an overall size of 8 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches.The letter reads, in full: "I received with your letter of the 26th Ultimo an estimate of the Duties which have accrued in your Office during the third quarter of the present year amounting to 402,540 dollars. It does not appear, whether the expences that have occurred during the quarter, are deducted from the sum. If not, I request to be informed of the amount, and that in future you will state the gross amount of the duties, and also the expences as near as they can be ascertained." Signed, "A Hamilton."
Condition: Laminated with a heat setting acetate. Lightly toned with some staining at the right edge. Pencil annotation, remnants of sealing wax, and a touch of loss at the left margin.
