[Republic of Texas]. Pay Orders (2) Made Out to McKinney and Williams. Two pay orders, each issued to McKinney & Williams for "payment of the Military." Includes:Pay Order No. 1145. 6 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches, Columbia; April 10, 1834. Made out to "MKenny [sic] and Williams" for "Five hundred and twenty six Dollars." Signed by John Wyatt Moody as Auditor. Endorsed "McKenny & Williams" on the verso.
Pay Order No. 3329. 6 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches, Houston; June 27, 1837. Made out to "McKinney & Williams" for "Eleven Hundred and Seventy Five 10/100 Dollars." Signed by John Wyatt Moody as Auditor, and Elisha Marshall Pease as Comptroller. Endorsed "McKenny & Williams" on the verso.
McKinney, Williams and Company, known as the "Barings of Texas," was a leading commission-merchant firm founded in 1834 with interests in land, banking, and town development. They were a critical source of financial support for the Republic, both during the Revolution and during its short existence.
Condition: Each cancelled in ink through the center; lightly toned with smoothed folds and a few light creases; pencil annotations on verso. No. 3329 with minor ink erosion, resulting in a touch of loss.
