Description

Project Mercury NASA Capsule Flight Operations Manual Book (SEDR 109), McDonnell Aircraft, September 1, 1961. A 6" x 7.5" ring-bound manual of approximately 240 pages with a printed faux-leather cover. This manual served as an official NASA/ McDonnell engineering and operational reference for Mercury astronauts and flight controllers. The inclusion of the Astronaut's Check List indicates it was used directly in training and potentially flight operations. It contains step-by-step operational sequences, system descriptions, troubleshooting measures, and emergency protocols for the Mercury-Atlas spacecraft numbered below. Fine.

Capsule 10: Mercury-Atlas 5; November 29, 1961; Chimpanzee Enos
Capsule 13: Mercury-Atlas 6 (Friendship 7); February 20, 1962; John Glenn
Capsule 16: Mercury-Atlas 7 (Aurora 7); May 24, 1962; Scott Carpenter
Capsule 17: Mercury-Atlas 8 (Sigma 7); October 2, 1962; Wally Schirra
Capsule 18: Mercury-Atlas 9 (Faith 7); May 15-16, 1963; Gordon Cooper
Capsules 19 & 20: Not flown.

SEDR (Systems Engineering Data Requirements) manuals were detailed engineering and operational handbooks required by NASA from its contractors. The September 1961 edition reflects refinements after early suborbital flights (MR-3, MR-4) and before America's first orbital flight, making it a significant artifact of early manned spaceflight preparation.
