Description

Revolutionary War Pay Order for a Horse Killed During a Military Expedition in Florida. One handwritten page, 7 1/4 x 6 inches; May 1777. A handwritten pay order made out to James Chery "for a horse kiled on the month of May on the Expedition in Florida praised at fourteen pounds [and] a sedle & Bridle praised at 5..." Attested to and signed by a Justice of the Peace at Savannah the following year on February 28, 1778.

No day is listed on the receipt, but it is likely that the horse was killed at the Thomas Creek Massacre on May 17, 1777, during a Georgia-led expedition into British East Florida. A small force of Georgia militia cavalry under Col. John Baker was ambushed by a mixed force of British regulars, Loyalist militia, and Native American.

Condition: Heavy dampstaining, with two areas of paper loss along the left affecting a single letter.
