Description

Republic of Texas Treasury Warrant Issued to Philip Coe. One partially printed page, 8 x 4 inches, Columbia, Texas; November 26, 1836. Mounted to cardstock, at top corners only, to an overall size of 8 1/8 x 4 1/4 inches. Certificate "No. 1222" issued to Philip Coe for $120. Signed by A. Brigham as Auditor and H. C. Hudson as Controller.

Philip Haddox Coe (sometimes spelled Phillip) was a Texas soldier and frontiersman originally from Georgia. Rumored to have taken his mother's maiden name after fleeing the state following the 1829 murder of Jethro Jackson, he resettled along the Brazos River in Washington County, where he homesteaded more than 4,400 acres and led raids against neighboring Native groups.

In 1835, Coe assumed command of a ranger force under Colonel John Henry Moore and, after Texas won independence, was commissioned as a captain in the First Regiment of Volunteers. He served until June 1836, seeing action at the Battle of San Jacinto. Returning to civilian life, Coe farmed and raised stock with Sam Houston, importing purebred horses from Tennessee to Gonzales County. Always ready to take up arms, he later joined the expedition against Rafael Vásquez and served as a captain in the Somervell Expedition. Coe died in Gonzales County in 1852.

Condition: Lightly toned. Professionally backed with archival tissue, sealing a closed tear at the top edge and ink erosion near the center. Cancelled with several "x" marks in ink. Minor ink blotting. Small pencil annotation at top right corner.
