Description
News of Texas in an Issue of Diario del Gobierno de la Republica Mexicana. Mexico: Imprenta del Aguila; June 5, 1837. Tom. VIII, Núm. 767. Four pages, 10 7/8 x 15 1/4 inches. Unpaginated and printed in three columns in Spanish. Issued by the Mexican government, this issue contains multiple articles addressing Texas as an independent republic, with particular focus on the question of annexation to the United States and its implications for slavery. Published just one year after Texas declared independence from Mexico, there is much discussion on the political and moral stakes of Texas' future. On the second page, first column, the paper reprints an article from The Bee, a New Orleans newspaper, outlining American arguments in favor of annexation and directly addressing abolitionists' objection to slavery. In part (English translation): "...admitting, for the sake of argument, that slavery is an evil, we maintain that the annexation of Texas to the United States cannot increase that evil...Slaves will not be allowed to be brought into its territory, except from the country of which it forms a part, and many evident benefits will be the consequence. It will diminish the excessively large number of slaves in the South; it will open a new and extensive field for the farmer's enterprise; it will raise the value of the slave; and as the slave increases in value, self-interest (without any other cause) will dictate that he be treated with kindness and humanity..."
The Diario publishes its own forceful rebuttal on the fourth page, beginning at the end of the first column. In part: "If Texas were annexed to the Union, [The Bee] says, the number of slaves, which is already too large in the South, would decrease, since they could only be obtained from those already existing in the United States...And who does not realize that if this horrific price of the degrading traffic in human beings is so low today...it would increase extraordinarily, in proportion to the greater profit it would provide to the traffickers? The cause of humanity, therefore, is highly interested in opposing the annexation of Texas to the United States...there is no doubt that all friends of humanity should take a decisive stand to ensure that Texas remains dependent on the Mexican Republic, which has completely abolished slavery many years ago..."
Other articles of note include an essay on the virtues of the Texas Revolution and a report on the movements of the Texan military on the Brazos River, both also reprinted from The Bee.
Condition: Lightly toned and creased at folds; complete separation at integral fold, reattached with archival tape. Dampstaining across top of all pages; a few instances of minor ink smudging, mostly occurring on the first page; a few minor instances of foxing.
