Description
Chihuahua Broadside Printing of a José Just Corro Decree on the Division of Mexico's Territories Including Texas. Single sheet, 8 5/8 x 12 3/8 inches; [Chihuahua]; January 5, 1837. Promulgated by Francisco Garcia Conde, the broadside announces the law passed on December 30, 1836 by Congress calling for the division of the territory of Mexico into as "many Departments as there were previously states." Passed eight months after the Texas victory at San Jacinto, the law calls for the division of the state of Coahuila and Texas into two Departments. Additionally, that "When order is reestablished in the Department of Texas, the Government will issue all the measures necessary for the organization of its authorities, establishing its capital in the place it considers most appropriate." With period annotation in ink on verso.Despite Texas having established itself as an independent Republic, Mexican authorities refused to concede its loss as evidenced by this decree. This is a later issue of item 882 in Streeter promulgated on December 30, 1836 by José Maria Ortiz Monasterio. Streeter lists only one copy of the Monasterio broadside, in his collection, now at Beinecke.
Condition: Stains at top and bottom corners on right. Rough edge along left, and two small chips along right. Single horizontal fold at center, with soiling on verso.
Reference: Streeter 882.
