2 Volumes, 8vo. 50 inserted plates of maps, engraved illustrations, and facsimile letters including frontispieces between both volumes. Publishers' green cloth; front and spine stamped in gilt; medallion of Grant's promotion to Major General in 1863 stamped on front cover, medallion of Mississippi River denoting Vicksburg and Chattanooga stamped on rear cover.

FIRST EDITION. Published by good friend Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), this work was completed just four days before Grant's death on July 23rd, 1885.

Condition: Vol. 1: Spine rubbed with slight damping; ends worn; boards scratched and rubbed; corners rubbed and bumped. Adhesive remnants on front paste down with slight bleed onto front free endpaper. Vol 2: Spine and spine ends rubbed; small abrasions to front and rear boards; stray pen marks and rubbing to boards.
