Description

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington: Hair and Color Wax Portrait. The portrait is in a glazed frame, 10½" x 13", with a reverse painted glass border. The portrait itself is extremely detailed and well executed, with the duke wearing a civilian tailcoat with the sash of the Order of the Garter and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck. The portrait is mounted on a brown velvet background. Mounted in a larger frame (22" x 22" overall) with the framed portrait is a velvet lined, leather case with a glazed gilt oval containing a sizable lock of the 1st Duke of Wellington's hair. Also in the frame is the original paper packet that contained the hair, upon which is written in ink "Hair of F[ield] M[arshal] the D[uke] of Wellington / vouched for by Wellington" by Lieutenant-General Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington; an engraved calling card, "Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington"; and, the original transmittal envelope postmarked "Tunbridge Wells / AU 15, '78" and addressed, in the 2nd duke's hand, to a relative, "The Honbl. Mrs. Pierrepont / Abbey Hotel / Gt. Malvern / Worcestershire". Minor splits in the Garter sash and slight loss to the Golden Fleece ribbon, else all excellent.
