Description
Nice Lot of Two Mid-Nineteenth Century American Swords. A M1840 heavy cavalry saber with unmarked blade that is actually about mint under some scattered light surface rust. Brass hilt with deep dark patina, the quillon slightly bent but not cracked. Only vestiges of the wooden grip remain with the coiled brass wire. Scabbard with a coat of grime, some surface rust and a couple of minor shallow dents. There is a hole rusted through at the top of the drag. The scabbard would clean to excellent. Actually a nice, readily restorable, example. Also an iron mounted infantry officer's sword circa 1840. Unmarked 32" curved blade, smooth and gray with just a few nicks and slight rounded tip. Iron hilt with two rather flamboyant outward branches, birdhead pommel with backstrap. Black leather wrapped grip with double strand of twisted brass wire, perfect. Original iron scabbard with a few minor dents. Scabbard and hilt both with deep dark patina and just some old scattered surface rust. Unusual form. Two good American swords of the Mexican War period.Auction Info
