Description
WILLIAM HENRY SHELTON GOUACHE "BREASTWORKS ON FIRE". Shelton was born at Allen's Hill, New York. Had a great war record, 1st N.Y.L.A., he was a Union artilleryman commanding a center section of Battery D at the Battle of the Wilderness, and was badly wounded and taken prisoner deep into the South. He worked his way from enlisted man to captain, and is singled out in the Official Records for gallantry (Vol. 25, part1). He is also mentioned in the silver Time-Life series (in the Killing Ground volume pages 64-65). He is listed in the Dictionary of American Artists, Sculptors and Engravers. These types of his works appear in Goss' recollections of a private. A painter, illustrator, and writer, he was a well-credentialed artist who studied at the Art Students League and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Art Institute of Chicago. This Gouache painting by Shelton, "Breastworks on Fire" has Civil War soldiers with rifles, and in the background, an American flag; his initials are in bottom left corner "W.H.S.". Image measures 13" x 8.25" on hard card 18.5" x 12.25".Condition: Fine, some discoloration on card.
