Description

The only astronaut to fly Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions

Apollo 7 Crew-Signed Launch Cover Honoring Astronaut Wally Schirra, also Signed by His Mercury and Gemini Rescue Ship Captains. A philatelic cover hand canceled at Cape Canaveral, Florida, October 11, 1968, the launch date of Apollo 7. This commemorative launch day postal cover is neatly signed by the full Apollo 7 flight crew in various inks: "Wally Schirra", "Walt Cunningham/ Apollo 7", and "Donn Eisele". The cachet features a portrait of Schirra and a caption noting his rare distinction as the only astronaut to have flown in all three of NASA's pioneering manned spaceflight programs. Flown mission dates for each program are printed beneath a photo. Affixed are two U.S. postage stamps: a green 1¢ "Andrew Jackson" definitive and a 1967 5¢ U.S. Space Walk stamp (Scott #1331). Additional signatures on the cover are the Captains of the U.S.S. Kearsarge (Mercury Sigma 7) and the U.S.S. Wasp (Gemini 6A). Quite a unique cover. Unaddressed. Excellent.

Apollo 7 marked NASA's triumphant return to manned flight following the tragic Apollo 1 fire. As the first crewed mission of the Apollo program, it tested the Command and Service Module (CSM) in Earth orbit and paved the way for the lunar missions. Schirra's presence linked the early spaceflight era to the lunar age, and this cover reflects both his personal legacy and a pivotal moment in American space history. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
