Description

Mercury-Redstone 3: Thirteen Vintage Glossy Photos of Alan Shepard and Backup John Glenn in Training for America's First Manned Spaceflight, all from the Personal Archives of NASA Legend Bill Taub. Ranging in size from 7" x 9" to 8" x 10.5", these B&W prints depict the astronauts mainly in their silver spacesuits as they simulate the upcoming mission. Seven have no numbers or captions. Six have both, as follows.
61-MR3-32, -35, -38, -40, -41, and -42: These are all dated April 29, 1961, just days before Freedom 7 flew. All have full press captions on versos ending in the following text: "...The first attempt to put a man into space in the U. S. aboard a Mercury Capsule will be launched atop a Redstone Rocket. This will be a sub-orbital trajectory shot down the Atlantic Missile Range." Generally excellent.

NOTE: The photos from this archive were the inspiration for the recent book by J. L. Pickering and John Bisney, Photographing America's First Astronauts, Project Mercury Through the Lens of Bill Taub. A beautiful book from the Purdue University Press. Highly recommended. From the Collection of J. L. Pickering
